Read through our story to learn more about our company’s history and the journey so far, which is full of perseverance, growth, setbacks and success.

The Early Days (1912-1938)

Gleeson & Cox began its story with Daniel Gleeson, who started his journey in the transport industry in 1912. Daniel purchased a Ford model T truck that he used to carry out the local cream run and fill potholes on Franklin County roads. Daniel retired from transport in 1938 and the story reignited in the 1960’s, when Daniel’s son Brian Gleeson, along with long-time friend Don Cox, began laying the foundations of what the company is today.

Gleeson & Cox (1967-1990)

Gleeson & Cox began in 1967 with a single truck in Waiuku has grown into one of the largest privately-owned fleets in the industry. Starting with a second-hand Dodge on a cream run, the business expanded steadily, reaching over 20 trucks by its 25th year. Over the next 20 years, the growth accelerated, with the fleet now numbering around 110 distinctive red and blue trucks, based in Wiri, South Auckland. Having played a key role in major infrastructure projects across Auckland and Waikato regions, Gleeson & Cox was poised for another 20 years of success and invites others to join its journey.

Gleeson & Cox (1990-2010)

Brian’s son, James Gleeson, returned from overseas in 1990 following the news that Brian was suffering with an illness. James dedicated himself to the family business during a difficult period of financial recession. Gleeson & Cox travelled through the recession as work became sparse and despite this, Brian and James continued to grow the company.  When James officially took over in 1994, the company was stable, strong and able to remain optimistic and look to the future.

A key turning point came when James won the contract for the Quay Street realignment, Gleeson’s largest contract to date. It allowed Gleeson & Cox to purchase six brand-new Western Star trucks, giving Gleeson & Cox an advantage over competing companies. To those who had been uncertain about the future, this was proof that Gleeson & Cox had successfully established a leading place in the Auckland transport industry and was headed into a brighter future.

Gleeson Group (2010-2025)

The Gleeson Group expanded rapidly from 2010, purchasing low emission trucks, installing safety and truck monitoring equipment, developing tracking and dispatch software and continuously leading the way in communication and management of the fleet.

In 2014, Gleeson Civil was launched and completed many commercial, roading and other infrastructure projects throughout Auckland & Waikato.

In 2018, the Gleeson Group acquired the Huntly Quarry, which supplies quality aggregates for a wide variety of projects in Auckland & Waikato.

In 2019, Gleeson Group bought Momentum Tyres which has progressively expanded to provide truck, bus, earthmoving and 4WD tyres now into most of the North Island.

In 2022 as part of continuing efforts to reduce and offset carbon emissions, Gleeson Group commenced planting 340Ha of plantation forestry on hill country adjoining the Huntly Quarry.

In 2024, Transport & Engineering commenced heavy transport repairs and maintenance in a four-bay workshop in Wiri.

In February 2025, Gleeson Group opened the doors of Gleeson Managed Fill in the Waikato as part of an integrated logistics materials service and in line with its commitment to responsible and sustainable materials management business.
