Gleeson Civil Contractors Ltd (Gleeson Civil) is a specialist civil contracting company built upon the successful Gleeson & Cox logistics business that has been operating in Auckland for over 50 years. Gleeson Civil’s track record in project delivery and exceptional customer service has seen us rapidly grow over the past three years, to become New Zealand’s mid-sized market leader in civil construction contracting.
Through the engagement of industry experts and significant investment in the right people, systems, processes and specialist plant, Gleeson Civil has the capability to deliver high-performing civil contracting works in and around the greater Auckland region. Our privately owned, Auckland-based company is the perfect size – big enough to handle complex projects, yet small enough to keep an eye on the detail.
Gleeson Civil’s highly experienced team and accessibility to resources gives us the ability to undertake full contract, subcontract and design and build services; and our track record in successful delivery has been proven on a number of significant civil works projects such as the redevelopment of 277 & 309 Broadway for Scentre Group (Westfield), Wattledown Farm Pond Stormwater Improvements Stage 2 and Massey University – East Precinct Enabling Works.
Gleeson Civil works closely with our sister company Gleeson & Cox Transport Ltd (G&C) who own over 100 truck and trailer units that are equipped with the most up-to-date GPS and weight management systems.
Gleeson Civil owns in excess of 35 construction machines including excavators, bulldozers, rollers and compaction equipment. Our ability to integrate resources from both sides of the business allows us to offer a complete service and provide greater value to our clients.

Capabilities

Our clients at Gleeson Civil include local and regional government authorities, private land development companies, utility companies, and leading civil engineering project management organisations.
Projects typically range from $200K to $10M and the scope of work includes:
Earthmoving
  • Bulk Excavation – recent work includes 100,000m3 of bulk excavation involving 30,000m3 of rock removal adhering to a very strict timeline on the Westfield Mall project in Newmarket – one of the largest retail construction projects in Australasia.
  • Specialised Excavation – Gleeson Civil are undertaking 75,000m3 of specialist tunnel extraction on the City Rail Link project in Auckland’s CBD. Works comprise a very difficult and complex excavation of an 18m deep trench along Albert St using our long-reach excavators. Other projects include the 25,000m3 excavation works at the live Wattlefarm Stormwater Ponds which required specific equipment and innovative methodology.
  • Rock Excavation – Gleeson Civil owns several rock breakers, used to complete the large rock excavation on the redevelopment of Westfield’s Newmarket malls.
  • Spoil Removal – we offer a competitive and attractive package for all types of spoil removal by utilising our large fleet of excavators combined with G&C’s truck and trailer resources.
  • Contaminated Material Specialists – Gleeson Civil is a certified asbestos and contaminated soil removal contractor. Our specialist COC Officer and crew have completed a number of large asbestos removal contracts in the last two years.
Civil Engineering

Gleeson Civil undertake the full spectrum of civil works and our staff are very experienced with design and build projects which includes offering value engineering and ECI services. On site, Gleeson Civil have the capability to construct various types of large retaining walls, ponds, footpaths, cycleways and we also undertake construction and maintenance of parks. We have two certified drainage crews within our team.

Commercial Development

Gleeson Civil is the main civil contractor on the Westfield Newmarket Mall projects which involves major earthworks, rock excavation, foundation and drainage works. We also carried out the excavation and all civil works on the Ramada Hotel Albany.

Roading

Gleeson Civil has undertaken the road re-alignment works at Massey University in 2017, and in 2018 we constructed the Park-and-Ride at Pukekohe Train Station for Auckland Transport. We have also had several ongoing asphalt and pavement works contracts.

Rail Infrastructure

Our project and site management teams comprise of a range of personnel with a wealth of rail experience, spanning from our General Manager to our Machine Operators. Our team has extensive experience working in the Auckland Metro Network, including flagship projects like the various DART projects and the Auckland Rail Electrification. We are also a founding member of the Total Rail Solutions alliance.

Concrete Structures

We have a specialist concrete construction team that specialise in large concrete filtration tanks and shotcrete stability works.

Transport Logistics / Bulk Removal and Supply Specialists

Gleeson & Cox Transport operates one of the largest haulage companies in the country which means Gleeson Civil is uniquely positioned to provide our clients with confidence that your project will be adequately resourced and delivered on time. We have become the “go-to” company for large excavations and material supply.

Demolition

We have undertaken several demolition contracts and is resourced with staff possessing specialist demolition experience and skills.

Technology and Specialist Equipment

Gleeson Civil has the latest GPS technology fitted in our excavators and a team of experienced operators working on high-profile and complex projects.

Our machines are equipped with HazardAvert proximity detection and collision avoidance system for added operational safety.

Our GPS fitted excavators operated by our experienced staff have been at work on several major Auckland motorway projects.

Gleeson Civil has an in-house developed transport management system, JAWS, for our trucking fleet as well as real time GPS tracking.

We also have in-house surveying operative and equipment serving our various projects.

James Gleeson
Managing Director

James has been closely involved with some of the biggest infrastructure and roading projects in both Auckland and the Waikato over the past 25 years. He is passionate about innovation and providing a quality service and has gained considerable experience and knowledge over the years in both the cartage and civil sectors. With the recent addition of Huntly Quarry to his portfolio, James can now offer an end to end infrastructure offering though his Gleeson Group of companies.

Derek Manning
General Manager

Derek is a Chartered Civil Engineer and Project Management Specialist with 35 years experience gained from working in local authority, consultant and contractor environments. He has successfully delivered a wide range of complex multi-discipline projects – from state highways to town centre developments right through to airports, waterways, environmentally sensitive environments and managing an open cast mine.

Mark Pelan
Chief Financial Officer

Mark is a Chartered Accountant with over 20 years experience in finance and accountancy management. He has worked with several high profile organisations and has been involved in numerous civil engineering and maintenance projects during his career.

Sarwindar Sandhu
Operations Manager

Sarwindar is responsible for the delivery of all Gleeson Civil’s projects. He has 16 years experience with complex and high profile civil construction projects in Auckland and overseas including the $160M Auckland Rail Electrification Project.

Graham Paton
HSE Manager

Graham has 15 years in safety management roles and worked on infrastructure sites for 30 years. He is a Registered Safety Practitioner, Accredited Safety Auditor with a NZ Safety Council Diploma in OHS. Experienced in working in high risk, busy urban environments such as KiwiRail projects e.g. Auckland Electrification Project ($160M); as well as bridge replacement, demolition, airports, sea walls and geothermal projects. He has an excellent record in maintaining a safe and accident-free environment ensuring everyone on site facilitates an overall safety culture.

Fady Ghanima
Project Engineer

Fady is a Civil Project Engineer who has been involved in infrastructure projects throughout Auckland with a total of 8 years in the industry. He has worked in the areas of roading, minor safety works, streetscaping, earthworks, drainage, ITS (Intelligent Transportation Systems) and underground ducting. This gives Fady the vast experience and technical knowledge to help deliver any type of infrastructure project.

Meg Carillo
Senior Quantity Surveyor

Meg has over 15 years of combined project managing & quantity surveying experience in Philippines, Singapore and New Zealand which involves numerous major projects in the building and infrastructure sectors with high-profile clients. Her engineering repertoire and experiences in post-contract administration enhanced her skills and expanded her ability contributes to project successes.

Mike Pullenbury
Site & Drainage Manager

Mike is a very capable Site Manager and a certified drainlayer. He has been operating earthmoving equipment for over 30 years and is regarded as top in his field. Mike has also been involved in many large rail projects on the Auckland metro network.

Tom King
Site Manager

Tom has been in the Civil and Excavation Industry for over 50 years. He was immediately recognisable for his unique skillset and expertise with machinery. Setting up his own Civil and Earthmoving company in 1996, Tom notably gained valuable experience with many commercial projects across Auckland. Generating a prominent track record for himself managing safe and successful Civil and Roading projects.

Lakhwinder Singh
Project Engineer

Lakhwinder is a Project Engineer with vast experience in Pavement, Asphalt and Chip sealing. He has been involved in major projects throughout Auckland with more than 5 experience in the construction industry. He played a key role in the delivery of 100000 tonnes at NX2 – Puhoi to Warkworth with zero LTI’s and MTI’s working closely with Fletcher/Acciona team on this Joint Venture before joining Gleeson Civil.

Redevelopment of 277 & 309 Broadway for Scentre Group (Westfield)

The $790M redevelopment of Westfield Newmarket malls at 277 & 309 Broadway for Scentre Group is the biggest mall development project undertaken ever by Westfield.

Gleeson Civil is carrying out $15M worth of earthworks, asbestos removal, rock blasting, drainage and pavement construction.

We are also providing additional resources and solutions to ensure our Client meets the non-negotiable opening date of the mall to retailers.

Wattle Farm Pond Stormwater Improvements Stage 2

This Design and Build project was completed for Auckland Council. The stormwater pond remedial comprised 25,000m3 of silt removal, 500m of mass block retaining wall construction, various drainage works and complete re-build and upgrade of existing stormwater infrastructure.

This complex project was satisfactorily completed for the Client by working in a live and sensitive environment at one of the largest stormwater ponds in Auckland.

Health, Safety and Environment

At Gleeson Civil, we are fully committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for our staff, our subcontractors and for our clients.

All staff undergo pre-employment drug and alcohol examinations and are continually screened throughout project deployment. Regular health and safety audits are carried out by our HSE Manager on all project sites.

Our HSE team provides support to our operations crew from project award and throughout the operational life of a project.

Our commitment to safety is evident through our accreditations and pre-qualifications with various clients. We are accredited with Class B Asbestos Removalist with WSNZ as well as in-house Drug and Alcohol Testing accreditation to ensure the health and safety of all involved on site.

Machinery

Gleeson Civil offers both wet and dry hire. Our GPS controlled excavators have been partnering up with Tier 1 contractors serving some major Auckland motorway projects.
